Building Sewer Requirements for Laterals

Sanitation is the District's department whose function is to collect the sewage from your homes and businesses and pump it to treatment plants located in Sausalito and Mill Valley.  The District maintains about thirty (30) miles of pipes, various manholes and clean-outs, and two pumping stations to convey your effluent for treatment.  Generally, the private property owner is responsible for upkeep of the sewer lateral that extends from the home or business and connects to the District pipe located below the street or under the sidewalk.

BUILDING SEWER REQUIREMENTS FOR LATERALS

The following are the requirements provided for by ordinance in the Tamalpais Community Services District and must be adhered to in the construction of side sewers in this District.

PERMIT - Permit must be obtained at the office of the Tamalpais Community Services District.  Permit fee is $6.00.

CONNECTION FEES - except as otherwise provided by ordinance.
Single residences $4,500.00,
Multiple residence and commercial $4,500.00,
Each additional unit $4,500.00

INSPECTIONS - All work shall be subject to at least two inspections by District staff.  One inspection to be performed before line is covered and one after covering line and placing clean-outs and black flow prevention device.  Inspection fee is $75.00

FEES DUE - All permit, inspection and connection fees must be paid before connection to the District sewer system.

SIZE OF PIPE - For single residences, multiple units and commercial buildings up to 150 fixture units or ten apartment units, where the lateral has a fall of at least one fourth inch per foot (2 percent slope), a 4 inch line is acceptable.  For all others a 6-inch line is required except for single residences without appurtenant structures.

TYPE OF PIPE - ABS or PVC schedule 40 or SDR-35 plastic pipe, which is FHA approved, with solvent weld or rubber ring joints.  Plastic pipe shall be subject to the approval of the Engineer when any doubt of the acceptability exists.  Clay pipe will not be accepted.

SLOPE - One-fourth inch per foot or 2 percent, except one-eighth inch per foot will be allowed in unusual circumstances and six-inch pipe shall be used for all multiple dwellings.  The contractor shall provide a builder’s level to allow the inspector to check the grade.
